In George Orwell’s 1984, Winston Smith works for the Ministry of Truth – a department dedicated to the very opposite: to creating propaganda in order to deceive the public. In short, to lie. But fiction itself is, well, fiction. Untrue. Make believe. Lies? Perhaps, but perhaps not entirely. Fiction often contains truths, too: about society, culture, the human condition. And science fiction, which often (but not always!) considers the future, may entail prediction, and predictions can become true. Hence, the Ministry of Lies is a publisher dedicated to the untruths of fiction, yet its name is also an oxymoron – like Orwell’s creation – a publisher of books in which hidden truths exist.
