On Wednesday, I attended the ceremony for the Arthur C. Clarke Award in London - a surreptitious copy of the winning book in my bag (as one of the judges, I was already in the know). And thus I was first to the pass when it was announced that Sierra Greer had won for Annie Bot, the thoughtful and emotional tale of a sex robot and its... owner? Partner? Sierra kindly followed my dictation for the dedication, though I had to correct 'Peter' to 'Gene'! Ho hum! It was nice to talk to some of the other authors, too, and to have confirmed by Adrian Tchaikovsky which of his two novels in the longlist he actually favoured (note to other judges: I told you so!). I will take a break from the panel next year, though I will likely return as a judge for the year after. Anyway, congratulations once more to Sierra, and to all of the authors who made the shortlist.
